The Windows machine recognised the drive in the USB slots. Plugged in the SuperDrive - now this is where it got weird. I then unplugged the device and started the Windows 10 on VirtualBox. I deleted all values - it was in fact blank in all areas including Name, VendorID and ProductID already. I then created a USB filter in the VM settings on VirtualBox after plugging in the drive to the Mac. I checked the Extension Pack is installed on VirtualBox. Yes I use OsiriX on my Mac - its super, but the CDs are encrypted so I have to open them on Windows and then use a shared folder to transfer the DICCOM files across. You might get a "New hardware found" wizard on the guest, that's normal. The filter should capture it and pass control to your guest.
Windows 10 supports USB3 (xHCI) natively, so use that. Make sure that at least USB2 (EHCI) is enabled in your VM settings.Make sure that the Extension Pack is installed on the host.If there is a failure, please state exactly which step failed: What you got to do is to "capture" (exclusively) the SuperDrive in your VM by creating a filter. Not on a Mac because the name of the folder that you'd share changes every time that the CD changes. Shared Folders, unfortunately wouldn't work. As such you cannot use the pass-through feature for the virtual DVD that your VM has.
The SuperDrive as you said is an external USB device.
